In Honor of Russell's Birthday

Caitlyn made up a song:

It's called "Daddy Cake":
Who's birthday cake is today?
Daddy-cake Daddy-cake
Who's cake is yellow and chocolate?
Daddy-cake Daddy-cake
What cake was made by mommy?
Daddy-cake Daddy-cake
Blow out the candles on
Daddy-cake Daddy-cake
OOOO Daddy Daddy Daddy
Daddy CAKE!

And, not to be left out (and because if there's a Daddy Cake, there MUST be a Mommy Cake):

Caitlyn's Episode 7

I know it's been a while since Caitlyn did this but there was nothing going on so, here she is.
I'm going to do three things today one is an interview, and one is a report so pay close attention.

Kansas State Fair
I've never been to the Kansas State Fair but I've talked to some people who have gone to see if I like the sound of it. Meredith: It's just like a normal fair, I'm not trying to say it's bad but it doesn't have anything special to it. Hannah: It has tons of booths corn dog, hot dog, cotton candy and Indian corn. Abby: I like the rides it's like your in a whole new world.

Talent Palooza
Yesterday Sister Murphy asked me to be in the church talent show and guess what, my mom and dad said it was okay!I think I'm going to sing in it.Sister Murphy said that most of the people in the talent show will be grown-ups.I'm so excited!

Quiz:

What was I asking when I'm interviewing my friends?
What am I excited about?
Answer with a post.

Just Because....

I can't hijack Russell's blog, like he did mine...

I need a filler for today...

He does the philosophical ruminating, and I do the rest ;) ...

I feel a need to embarrass him publicly :) ....

But mostly because He's turning FORTY today (!) and that's something to celebrate, even over here.

I bummed a few pictures off Phil, who had access to the ones at their parents' house, because I thought it would be fun to take a little walk through (not quite) forty years of history. And because it's always fun to see pictures of someone you only knew as an adult when they were kids.

Happy Birthday, Russell.

Christmas Day

We had a grand Christmas. Small, but grand. The girls (mostly) liked their presents (Santa couldn't get Kit's trunk for Caitlyn, which made her a bit sad at first... and I think Megan missed getting a lot of high tech gadgets... but the little girls LOVED their gifts), and after breakfast, we've been mostly lazy ALL day. We've watched bits and pieces of Alvin and the Chipmunks, Kit Kittridge, Mamma Mia, and all of Wall-E (which is fabulous, by the way). Being perfectly lazy is a perfectly acceptable way to spend Christmas.

Christmas Villiage (And Yet Another Mosiac)

One of the women I visit teach goes all out at Christmas time with the decorations. One of which is an ENORMOUS Christmas village that takes up her whole dining room. I was so enthusiastic about it, she told me to bring the girls back for a look. Which we did last Monday. Kristen had fallen asleep, but she'd seen it when we went visiting teaching, so she didn't miss much.

The other three took the camera and went nuts.

Joyeux Noël

I remembered, Mom. :) Merry Christmas.

Dashing Through The Parking Lot

Last night we headed across town to Bradley Fair for our annual carriage ride. It was a pleasant night: not too cold (like two years ago) or too snowy (like last year), but rather cold and clear. Perfect.

You've noticed that Megan's missing? She decided that she'd rather go to a party at her Language Arts teacher's house. And she had a good time. :)

The girls all adored the horse. Her name is Janey. :)

And this year, we got to ride in the wagon rather than a carriage. That was fun. There are a few more pictures up over at Flickr.

The Christmas Nativity Play

For those of you who haven't received or seen our annual Christmas video in the past, we have been doing the Christmas Puppet Nativity play for years. Ever since my mom made us these puppets for us. This is this years' version. Enjoy!

Attitude

Last Saturday, Megan came to me and said, "You know what I want? I want to take pictures that have some attitude." I didn't think anything of it until I noticed these on the camera.

I guess she managed to capture "attitude"...

Story Night, 2008

We did our story night tradition last Friday. We invited the Dumlers over for dinner, and then read some stories. Caitlyn started off with The Grinch (with voices and everything)

Megan read Emma's Christmas -- Caitlyn sang the song in between pages; it was very cute.

And even Alison "read" a story this year.

It was a LOT of fun!

Rosettes

We had the missionaries over a while ago and made our rosettes. They thought it was a fascinating process (they were confused at first because Russell kept calling them "cookies", which they are not), and even ate a whole bunch. The girls helped, too; Alison even did a couple. Kristen wanted to cook some, too, and was sorely disappointed when we said no. She did like eating them, though.

While the missionaries were over, they messed around with the camera. Megan thought Elder Ale looked like Barak Obama... here's is "presidential imitator" picture.

It was a fun evening.

May All Your Days Be Bookish and Bright

The two things we do well around here are books and blogs, so here's our bookish bloggy Christmas letter!

Kristen is our little spitfire, two and half years old, bouncing off the walls (when she's not drawing on them), watching TV, going anywhere her older sisters go. Her favorite things are climbing (trees, couches, people), and kicking (balls, toys, people). And her favorite books are anything by Mo Willems, especially the Elephant and Piggie books. That, and Gingerbread Baby, by Jan Brett and Owl Babies, by Martin Waddell. You can't say she's not well-rounded.

Alison, who just turned five, is the most introverted child of the bunch. She doesn't like starting anything, but once she gets there she's just fine. The big start this year was preschool at West Heights Preschool, with teachers are Mrs. Laura and Mrs. Hattie. She loves them both, and has several friends at school. But her favorite time is when Mrs. Cindy comes, reads them stories, and lets them check out a book to take home. Out of all the books she's brought home, Bats at the Beach, by Brian Lies has been everyone's favorite. We were very sorry to send it back. She also has a fancy streak, and will never turn down the chance to bring a Fancy Nancy book home.

Caitlyn, the budding writer and actress, is in third grade and still just as boisterous (which is a good word for loud and talkative) as ever. She has also discovered the joy of reading chapter books. Having the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan literally thrust into her hands by her older sister, she has found that she can't stop reading them. Even though she enjoys reading books herself, she still loves to have Mom read out loud to her in the evenings, and still talks about when they read The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley. Lots of fun voices to "do".

Megan, who really epitomizes the word "bookish" around here, is 12, in seventh grade, and always has a book in her hand. In fact, when we asked what book we should use for her, she said "Give me a million years and maybe I could choose one." This past summer, however, Mom introduced her to the pleasure of this:
which led her to read the original Jane Austen book. She liked it, enough so that for her history day project this year, she's going to answer the question "What influence did Jane Austen have in history?" Something to ponder, anyway. Not one to be completely stuffy, she keeps up her fantasy reading, begging copies of Brisingr, by Christopher Paolini and Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer (heck, she read the whole series... and saw the movie) off her friends.

Melissa has spent the year writing (on her blog, and for Estella's Revenge) and has added Book Review Editor -- for Dialogue, a Mormon journal (with Russell; our first issue's the Spring 2009...) and Estella's Revenge -- to her resume. This fall, she also had the pleasure of being on the Middle Grade Fiction panel for the Cybils -- a children's/young adult literature blogger award. It took up two months of her life, but she had a blast. (Not to mention all the free books!) Her favorite book she's read, so far, has been Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass. She also has re-read all of Jane Austen's books this year (balance is paramount!), her favorite being Persuasion. She read lots of other books, in between being wife, mother, choir director and Primary teacher, too.

Russell read a lot this year, but as usual the majority of it was scholarship for his lectures or news for his blog--he looks at his wife and daughters and how they plow through books (some of which are actual novels) and he feels terribly under-read. He keeps telling himself that he's going get back to reading fiction someday, and perhaps one of these years he will. In the meantime, though, he feels blessed to have a good job at Friends University, and numerous colleagues and friends to learn from. His reading choice for the year was fascinating (but somewhat depressing) book, The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. (He figures he's allowed a little melancholy; seeing as how he turned 40 this winter.) Two other books he thoroughly enjoyed were A Godly Hero, by Michael Kazin and Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder.

May you all have a very Merry Christmas, and a blessed, bookish New Year!

Putting Up the Tree

I'm in a mosaic mood again...

You can see the individual photos over at Flickr.

Alison Had a Birthday...

Shout Hooray!

Alison had a great birthday! She opened one present after breakfast...

Then, after a fun preschool (forgot the camera, sorry), she waited and waited and waited... until everyone was home and she could open the rest!

Caitlyn was her present-opening helper.

Alison didn't mind (too much). Then it was time for the cake!

She blew out her candles, and we all enjoyed a piece (before dinner!) and then headed off to the ward Christmas party...

Where they took a very cute picture of Alison!

It was a wonderful day!
