Hawaii in January is Good for the Soul

(Thank you, Betsy, for the title this week!)

There was a moment this week, when I was sitting in the pool, looking out over the blue sky and golf course and the ocean in the distance, that I wished I had the soul of a poet. If I were my lovely friend Corinne, I'd write something wonderfully poetic and amazing. But I am not that sort of person, unfortunately. What follows is quite the travelogue; if you're not interested in the long version, the short version is we got a lot of sun, no one was seriously injured, and we all had a grand time.

Monday: South. We headed down to South Point to see the waves and feel the wind (ah, reminded us of home!). Then around the tip to Punalu'u black sand beach. We tried to go swimming there, and Russell, Megan, and Caitlyn managed to get in the (cold!) water with snorkel masks and fins. Kristen was feeling a bit under the weather, so she mostly laid out on a rock and sunbathed. Alison hadn't discovered her love of the ocean yet, and was content to sit on the beach and dig. We didn't last terribly long (black sand beaches are hot!), before heading back towards home. We stopped at the Punalu'u bakery for lunch (meh) and then hit the Place of Refuge (I can never remember the Hawaiian name for it) to do more snorkeling. The snorkeling was better here, and everyone got in for a bit. There was a nice cove for Alison and Kristen to play in, and everyone else enjoyed looking at the fish. We didn't make it back from this unscathed, though: Russell gouged out a bit of his heel at Punalu'u, and Megan, Caitlyn and I all managed to get nice sized scrapes. Lesson learned: lava rocks and coral are sharp!

Tuesday: West. Which means we stayed put. We puttered about the condo (which is really very nice; we've not stayed in the three bedroom before) and then headed to Hilo Hattie's (if we didn't go, it wouldn't be a trip to Hawaii!) for souvenirs. Megan decided she wanted to go pearl "diving", and me being nostalgic (I did the same thing when I was 14), we agreed. She got twin black/purple pearls, and because she didn't want earrings, we ended up getting a pendant for her and a ring for me. We even got a "bonus" pearl for Caitlyn, though I am making her wait for a setting! We then hung out at Keouhou Bay and went snorkeling (a much much better snorkeling experience) and Alison learned that she REALLY likes swimming. I think her life goal now is to be a surfer/cook.

Wednesday: East. We decided, since the only time we'd been over to the Hilo side was when Megan was a baby, that we should go back over there. We drove over the Saddle Road (WAY cool) that goes between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and down into Hilo. We went to Rainbow Falls first, and (in the most favorite thing all day) discovered a forest of banyan trees (we think) that we spent a good while climbing in and playing around. From there we hit the farmer's market (interesting, but the girls were less than patient with it), the 'Imiloa Planetarium (interesting, but a bit overpriced), the zoo (interesting, and worth the price... free), and then Akaka falls (interesting, but by this point, we were tired of each other). We had dinner in Waimea, at a burger place that served local food (slightly better than meh) and then headed home to crash.
Thursday: Northwest. This was another slow start and then we hit Hapuna beach. Everyone got in... and we all had a grand time. Megan, Caitlyn and Russell went WAY out to jump waves. Alison became a ocean demon; she was the first one in and the last one out. She even figured out the boogie boards! Kristen and I played on the beach for a while, but I eventually convinced her to head out, and we had a good time jumping the smaller waves. She was doing great until she headed back to shore and a biggish wave got her and pushed her under. She refused to get back in after that. After a few hours of sun and surf, we showered (sort of) and dressed and went out to dinner at Bubba Gump's with Grandpa and Grandma. Honestly, we went in with low expectations, but ended up having a really good meal. Everyone enjoyed everything they got (except Megan got a Pina Collada and ended up not liking it. Well, now she knows.) and the waitress was especially grand with my crazy kids. The second Alison discovery of the trip: she REALLY likes hamburgers. A lot. Kristen even found something she could eat, amazingly. Lesson learned: jumping in ocean waves doesn't seem like a lot of work, but the next morning you really feel it!

Friday: Splurge. We went places today, but not in one particular direction. Russell played golf with his dad in the morning, and the girls and I hit the pool for an hour or so. We went out to lunch at Quinns Almost by the Sea (love that!) where we had the most wonderful waitress (and fish sandwiches, and Megan discovered that strawberry daquris are MUCH better than pina colladas). We dropped Megan and Russell off for their adventure: a trip to the summit of Mauna Kea (13,000+ feet) to see the observatories up there. When I picked them up at 11 p.m., they were bubbling over with how COOL and neat and interesting their trip was. The rest of us went grocery shopping, and back to the pool, and then to a luau. And while there was a bit of complaining (pigs roasted in imus kind of smell, and the program was alternately interesting and long and boring), we had a fun time. It helped the people we sat next to were quite fun and very forgiving of our craziness, especially considering they were on an anniversary trip. And I discovered, at least, that rain is very nice here in Kona, even if it does make things a bit more humid.

Saturday: North. We had one last day, and time for one last adventure. We headed north this time, to the end of the state highway (seriously) to see the Pololu Valley. It was impressive. Russell and Megan were game for climbing down into it, but I wasn't going to drag the other girls down (it was back up I was worried about, really), and so we nixed that idea and headed back south (only way we could go) to the Keokea beach park. We ate lunch there, knocked around climbing on the rocks, viewed Maui (seriously), and collected a whole bunch of interesting things that have drifted up on the beach. From there we stopped in Hawi and got some very yummy ice cream (Mexican chocolate, Tahitian vanilla, Macademia nut were a few of the more exotic flavors; no one tried the mango, passion fruit or pistachio). And then, after a slight detour in which we saw whales (but not jumping; we've never seen them do that), we headed back to Hapuna beach. Another fun day of playing in the surf (the waves were AMAZING), digging on the sand, and basically enjoying the ocean. Because we were there late, we stayed through until sunset. A wonderful end to an amazing week.

And today's been lazy: we're looking at church in a bit, and then playing with cousins (Mike and Marjorie's family are here) before packing up and heading home. It's been a wonderful week!

Pictures are coming, I promise. But in the meantime, I thought you'd enjoy this.

It Was a Week

in which we spent talking about going to Hawaii. No one likes us much anymore.... That said, I'm sitting here on the patio (excuse me: lanai), soaking up the lovely humidity, enjoying the cool breeze, and what we did last week doesn't seem to matter much.

Monday and Tuesday the girls were off... We didn't do much. I think we volunteered at the humane society, and Alison had a doctor's appointment. Caitlyn slept over at Merry's house, and we did a bit of shopping for our trip. That's it. (And yes, they did end up squabbling, which means I really need to think up a plan for spring break: Russell and the girls have different spring breaks this year, and I'm not sure I want to spend a week at home with them. It's so different in the summertime!)

There was school the rest of the week for everyone. Caitlyn got sick Wednesday night (in the middle of the night, so, Thursday morning actually) with the stomach flu that has been going around. She spent Thursday at home being lazy and not eating. Friday morning, she was feeling better and decided she wanted to go to school, even though she threw up breakfast (sssshhhh, don't tell. If we hadn't have been leaving for a week, I'd have let her stay home again). When she got to school, she found that everyone thought she'd already left!

Yesterday was a loooonnng day getting here, but it was uneventful. We made all our flights, we didn't have any really crazy running through airports to do, and the girls were (mostly) behaved on the flights. The only problem was from Dallas to LA, where Kristen didn't have a window on her aisle. She really threw a fit over that. But other than that, the girls were good.

And now, we're here! Have a lovely week. I know we will!

This is the House that Kristen Built

Setting: the day after a two day vacation where all the kids were home after school. Cold outside. Just returned home from storytime at the library.

Mom is puttering around, putting books away. Kristen goes downstairs and putters around, using all the cushions she had previously drug downstairs (before storytime). Soon, Mom hears noises of frustration. She asks to find out what's wrong, and the answer: Kristen can't get the roof of her clubhouse to stay up. Sensing an opportunity (Mom does like to build things, too), Mom got into the act. At Kristen's suggestion, they dragged (drug?) down all of kitchen chairs, got out the duct tape, and the two of them came up with this:

It made it very difficult to get downstairs (and back up), but Kristen was very proud of her accomplishment.

Seven Things to Do When It's Blinking Cold Outside

(a reprise from last summer's blinking hot post...)
It snowed on Monday. And there was school. It then got bitterly cold for Tuesday and Wednesday, and there was no school. There was much rejoicing (by mom) when it "warmed" up (20s instead of single digits and negative wind chill) on Thursday and everyone went back to school.
1. Make a snow face. The snow wasn't the sticky kind so they made do by shoveling it into a huge pile and calling it a "face" or a "gourd" ("You know: like Mr. Lund on Veggie Tales, Mom."). I'm just glad Russell was out there playing with them. I loathe snow.
2. Watch tons of movies. Mostly Scooby Doo that we checked out from the library, but also Shaun the Sheep and Despicable Me.
3. Play with friends who are better at arranging impromptu play dates (masses of kids running around the church gym screaming: oh yeah!) than you are.
4. Argue. A lot. Oh, man, was mom glad to see them back in school.
5. Stay up late. Granted, we never knew if there was school, but they had to stay up late (Alison couldn't sleep last Sunday night because she was SO excited about the idea of snow) just to find out!
6. Go to storytime. Well, we were going stir-crazy in the house. Piano, zumba, everything it seemed had been canceled. Thankfully, the library came through, and we had STORYTIME! I drug (literally) Alison and Kristen there. And was it ever nice.
7. Talk about, think about, and plan for Hawaii next weekend.
We did have a filled weekend, though. Caitlyn and I went to the Museum of World Treasures (yawn) for a Girl Scout sleepover, which was kinda fun. Caitlyn and I slept next to Elvis and Marilyn Monroe. I suppose it's not often you can say that. Saturday, Megan, Caitlyn and I went to the Humane Society to get our pin numbers and assignments: we're making kibble treat chew toy things for the dogs twice a month. So, we learned how to do that. And then we walked with Megan as she walked dogs. Only one more year until Caitlyn can walk them, too. And last night, Russell and I went to a really interesting party thrown by a woman Russell worked on a state representative campaign for last fall. Think French salons -- we all brought food, and then we went around the room; everyone was given at least 10 minutes to talk on a subject of their choosing, if they wanted. I wasn't sure, going in, what it'd be like, but it turned out to be quite fascinating. I even managed to come up with something intelligent to say sometimes, too. A fun idea, anyway.
And church today was nice. Nothing exciting (though I was told that Kristen told someone that Hawaii has a "better church": the conversation: "I heard you're going on vacation. Where are you going?" K: "Hawaii!" "Do they have church there?" K: "Yep! It's a better church!") happened.
And that's about it. Have a great week! Next week will be from sunny and warm Kona! (No... we're NOT excited or anything!)

Obligatory Snow Post

So, Megan's seminary teacher said that whenever they get around to teaching D&C section 76 the weather ALWAYS gets screwy. Sure enough, they were scheduled to teach section 76 this week, and sure enough, it snowed on Monday and then got BITTER cold on Tuesday through Thursday. School and seminary canceled Tuesday and Wednesday (possibly Thursday). Much fun. They got to play in it on Monday at least.

There was some sledding

And shoveling

and goofing off

And since they couldn't get the snow to stick right to make a snowman, a snow gourd is what they decided on.

All because it only comes once a year!

Random Thoughts

If it's not cold outside, going to Hawaii doesn't seem like much of a luxury. Hopefully, the snow that is forecast for tonight will come.
It is not the smartest thing to stay up to midnight watching Bollywood movies (Om Shanti Om; it's LOADS of fun) the night before a temple trip where you are supposed to leave at 6:30 a.m.
I haven't been in the baptistery since before I was married. And aside from having cold feet the entire time, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Teenagers can be pretty goofy. But it's fun to play games with them.
Monday mornings after Christmas break are really, really hard. On everyone.
Monday afternoon preschool after Christmas break is really, really rowdy.
Getting back into the swing of things is nice, even if it means a few cranky days.
Russell got sick with the cough/mucus/sore throat that the girls and I had in November and December. I am hoping NOT to catch it again.
With Megan taking on volunteering at the hospital, I'm spending even more time in my car. Time to start listening to audiobooks.
I talk too much at book group. Even when there's no book to discuss. Why do I do this?
It's hard when bad things happen. Or even not-too-bad things, but you fear the repercussions of school librarians. It makes Alison, at least, very teary.
And that, I think, is the week in a nutshell! Have a great week. Stay warm!

Keeping Busy....

So, since we're going to Hawaii next month (hopefully; there seems to be a bit of trouble with the plane tickets. Hopefully, Russell can work it out tomorrow...), we decided to stay put in between Christmas and New Years. Which means we needed to find things to do. Amazingly enough, we did.
We:
  • went swimming at the Y (only once, because it's cold, and I really dislike getting into swimsuits when its cold)
  • went roller skating at the roller rink (fun times, I tell you)
  • stayed in PJs until noon most days
  • watched more movies than is humanly necessary
  • had friends over
  • went shopping for Russell's birthday
  • celebrated Russell's birthday
  • went to a friend's house
  • had a few crises
  • went on a date with Russell (ate Indian food, went to a jazz concert, saw RED -- fun movie, that)
  • stayed up late and slept in late
  • ate too much junk food
  • had and went to a couple of fun parties
  • spent too much time on the computer
  • argued less than I expected
And now it's January 2, 2011 (how long do you think it'll take me to remember to write 2011?), and we've got afternoon church... another week, another Christmas, another year. Where does the time go?
Have a great week! Stay warm...
