For the whole story...
Back in December, we went to Alison's 5 year checkup. The nurse-practitioner noticed some wax buildup in Alison's ear, and tried to get it out. Alison screamed... and since she was getting shots, the NP decided that we should come back in a few weeks to see if we could get it out.
We went back in January. The NP tried digging again (actually, they got out this water contraption, and tried squirting it out), and got a bit of wax out. Alison still screamed that it was hurting... (maybe at this point we should have figured there was something wrong?) The NP told us to get some ear drops, and put them in every day, and come back in a few weeks. Which we did.
It's now February. We went back. Still digging, still screaming... the NP decided to get the doctor involved, so she came and looked at it. She said, "It looks like wax, but go see an ENT so they can see what it is. They have better, bigger tools anyway." A referral was made, an appointment was made, and off to the ENT we went today.
The ENT doctor came in, took a look at it and said, "That's not wax. It's a bead or a rock. Come across the hall and let me look at it with my microscope and get it out for you."
Yep: it was a bead. (They gave her a nice little treasure box to keep the it in. And it's dang hard to get a picture of something that small.)

Alison was very brave; there was screaming and crying, but she held still, and the doctor got it out. (Took 5 minutes, too.) He said that there's some scaring in the ear (he wanted to know how long it'd been in there; I have no idea before December...), and gave us some medicine to help with that. But now her ear's all better. (And we talked about putting things in there, though she has no memory of doing it. Maybe it was Kristen??)
And, because she was very, very brave, we got her a present:

She loves her new music box; it's something she's been wanting for a very long time.
And no more doctors for a while. Yay!
